Personal development is vital to our professional success and is also something that many of us do not do enough of. To reach our maximum potential as human beings, we must strive for mental greatness — a feat that takes preparation, discipline and a constant willingness to learn and grow. Finding out more about the value of personal development will help us become better leaders in the world we live in today.

To have more than you’ve got, become more than you are.

Jim Rohn, an incredibly wise entrepreneur, and motivational speaker believes that the key to success in all facets of life is personal development. It’s used as the means to an end, a holistic approach to developing both our skills and knowledge so that we may thrive in life and business. According to Rohn, “It’s the struggle and challenge to develop ourselves and our skills to see what we can create in the way of value in the marketplace.”

Personal Development in 3 Parts

In Rohn’s article “The 3 Parts of Personal Development”, he explains that we can progress in three different areas; spiritual, physical and mental.

Spiritual

No matter who or what you believe in, Rohn strongly suggest that you “become a student of the spiritual side of your nature.” Anything we can do to develop our spiritual connection is necessary as it will help us in our journey to success.

Physical

No matter what people say, appearance DOES matter to some degree. You want to be perceived positively by others, so it’s important to make an effort to ensure that. Feeling good about your physique will not only give you confidence but will fill you with a sense of self-worth.  As Rohn says: “be conscious of self, but not self-conscious.”

Mental

“Stretching your mind,” pursuing new ideas and tackling topics that most people find difficult will give you an advantage in the “marketplace.” Rohn emphasizes that reading and providing your mind with “mental food” is a crucial step in personal development.
