Icebergs Can Teach You a Smart and Helpful Lesson

Icebergs are not what you think they are. When I saw this iceberg illustration by Sylvia Duckworth, I was struck by the lessons it shows. Let’s begin with a simple science lesson. Scientific research has taught us that almost 90% of an iceberg is under water. So, what we see on top of the water is only 10% of this big ice mass. Let’s apply this to the realm of personal growth.

Icebergs Illusion

When we see or read about a successful individual, we don’t see the countless hours and efforts that have resulted in triumph. We incorrectly conclude that it’s easy-peasy or that the person had a streak of good luck.

Sylvia pinpoints the many components that netted the 10% we see. Behind most accomplishments (business, professional or personal) there are many facets—sacrifices, planning, healthy habits, barriers, failures, and disappointments.

icebergs illusion-2Sylvia’s picture reminded me of a conversation I had with a very successful executive woman a few years ago. She shared how some females would isolate her because of her success. She said, “They see my beautiful clothes, new car, nice house and grow resentful. They have no idea how hard I’ve worked for these things as a single mother. I’ve had to overcome severe financial problems caused by a painful divorce. I was the sole earner for my children so I couldn’t allow my personal setbacks bring me down. I juggled children and work and dedicated hours to both.” After this chat, when I would hear gossipy remarks about this woman’s success I would respond, “We could have the same things if we were to work as hard as she does and sacrifice a few personal relationships.” The snide remarks would stop.

Before we covet another person’s success, remember that we see only 10% if their life’s iceberg. Many efforts are underneath the glistening lights of their achievements. Also, success requires effort and action on our part, but it’s possible.
