The Impact of Arts Education on the Texas Economy

What sector in the Texas  generates more than $5.1 billion, employs 700,000 workers, and generates more than $318 million in statewide tax revenue? The arts do. The Texas Cultural Fund, recently, published a State of the Arts report providing significant information about the positive impact that the arts and creative industries have on the Texas economy and the beneficial influence of arts education on students’ success. Here are some findings from the report:

  • Students engaged in the arts early in high school had lower dropout rates and greater graduation rates
  • Students who complete more arts classes have up to 15% higher pass rates on standardized tests than students with fewer arts classes
  • At-risk students who complete more than one art class are half as likely to drop out

Why are these student achievements important? In 2013, almost 7% of that class dropped out of school. An educated population that is well-prepared will meet future workforce needs.

This report makes a compelling case for school districts and the state to increase investment and funding of arts education.

The arts integrate life and learning for all students and are integral in the development of the whole person. ~ Dr. Terry Bergeson
