A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for.

Lesson to learn:

Being too comfortable in your safe space inhibits personal growth. We can be safe in our homes, life situations, friendships, routines, and jobs. However, are we living to our fullest potential? Are we experiencing adventures? Are we achieving to our abilities?

Many years ago, a mentor asked me, “Rosy, why do you want to strap a plow harness to a thoroughbred? You’re a thoroughbred, not a plow horse. Look for the wind and run. Don’t settle for a safe career.”

At first, I didn’t quite understand what he meant, but over time the meaning became clear. I was indeed lucky that someone saw my potential and told me to race with the wind. What successes I would have missed had I settled into a safe harbor.

So, I pass on that same advice to you. Look for the wind and get your ship out of the harbor. Move away from your comfortable spot. With proper planning and preparation, you can weather the storms and experience beautiful trips.

Does it get easier over time? Nope. I still have to work hard at getting out of personal space. So, for me, it will always be a work in progress. Are you still not convinced? Then, maybe you’ll find encouragement in one of Ann Latham’s sixteen reasons to get out of your comfort zone.
