Who uses the internet?

Are you interested in getting a snapshot of who is using the internet in the USA? Pew Research Center released a report Americans’ Internet Access:  2000-2015. Here are a few key trends:

  • 58% of senior citizens use the internet.
  • Individuals with college educations are more likely than those who do not have high school diplomas to use the internet.
  • Individuals earning more than $75,000 are more likely to be internet users than those earning less than $30,000
  • 78% of blacks and 81% of Hispanics use the internet, compared with 85% of whites and 97% of English-speaking Asian Americans.
  • 78% of rural residents are online.

Internet use to drive 1.4% rise in global media consumption

People around the world are likely to spend more than eight hours a day consuming media this year, according to a report. According to the Media Consumption Forecast report, people will spend an average of 492 minutes a day consuming media in 2015, up 1.4 percent from 485 minutes a day in 2014; an increase that will be driven by rapid growth in internet use, which will increase by nearly 12 percent. ZenithOptimedia’s report surveys the changing patterns of media consumption in 65 countries across the world, and assesses how people will allocate their time to different media between 2014 and 2017. Cell phone subsidies expand to Internet use

The federal subsidy for low-income Americans, officially called Lifeline, provides eligible recipients with $9.25 a month to buy phone service. Following a controversial vote…the FCC will now allow the more than 18 million Lifeline recipients to buy broadband with their subsidy too. Eligible recipients (those living at or below 135% of the poverty line) will receive the same benefit card, which will still come loaded with the $9.25 a month that they get for discount phone service. Cuban Government Expands Internet Access With More Wi-Fi Hotspots And Cheaper Costs

Cuba will be adding 35 government computer centers with Wi-Fi access around the country, cutting prices from $4.50 to $2 per hour….the Cuban government announced the expansion of Internet access by adding Wi-Fi hotspots and slashing connection costs by more than 50 percent. This comes after President Obama said in December that the Cuban government had given him its word that it would grant more access to its people. Read more…

During the summer months, Internet and mobile usage tends to increase as children have more free time and families plan summer getaways. According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, a record-high number of data breaches were recorded in 2014, with more than 780 breaches a 27.5 percent increase over the number of breaches reported in 2013. Given the continued rise of data breaches and increased online and mobile transactions during the summer months, consumers must be aware of several risks and make efforts to stay protected.
