Recognizing American Creative Entrepreneurs

American_Made_AwardsI have always marveled at how American individuals who are involved in design and crafts can transform their artisanal talents into profitable businesses. These artists find a way to express their creative side while making a living. Actually, much more than just making a living, they reach a wide audience all over the world and bring enjoyment into the lives of countless, and far away customers.

Everyone is familiar with the great success of Martha Stewart, founder of a “how to” publishing, TV and merchandise empire. I have been a long-time fan of her television shows and have even found great inspirations in some of her projects. What I didn’t know about Martha is that she has maintained her interest in American artisans. I remember how she would take us television viewers on a “field trip” and visit the site of an American business – from Christmas ornament designers, peony growers to repairers of pottery and dinnerware. I always enjoyed seeing these small business sites.

Each year, Martha Stewart and the editors of Martha Stewart Living honor a group of American makers, craftspeople, small business owners, and innovators in four categories: crafts, design, food, and style. These individuals earn the title of American Made Award Winner.

At the end of the competition, there are nine judge-selected American Made Award Winners and one Audience Choice Award Winner. What are the prizes for these small business owners? Prizes include:

  • a trip for two to New York City to attend the American Made event;
  • a spot in the American Made Market;
  • $10,000 to grow the winners’ businesses;
  • a video produced by their in-house team; and
  • the opportunity to be featured in Martha Stewart Living magazine and on their website.
