Being aware of the employment laws is a step you can take as a business owner. From hiring to firing, understanding the labor laws can help you avoid detrimental mistakes and keep your business processes running smoothly. Here’s a quick rundown of five federal labor laws you should know:

The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)

The ADA prohibits discrimination of those with disabilities of any kind that do not limit major life activity. Thus, as a business owner, you must offer benefits and equal opportunities to these employees.

 

 

Age Discrimination In Employment Act (ADEA)

Individuals who are 40 years and older are protected under this law. Whether it has to do with hiring, firing or benefits, this group of employees require certain legal responsibilities.

If your business has at least 50 employees, the FMLA Act applies to you. This law states that each person be granted 12 weeks of unpaid leave for certain medical and family reasons.

 

 

The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA)

The NLRA ensures that employees can come together for collective bargaining reasons, to organize unions and to restrict private sector practices that can harm the general welfare of the workers, business and the economy.

 

 

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)

Under the FCRA, accuracy, privacy and fairness in the information that consumer reporting agencies obtains is ensured.
